With everything happening in the world, it has never been more important for us to take care of our planet. So, this Earth Day, we wanted to show how we at the Bookbarn have been going green to help make a difference.
From our café to our shop, and right through to our warehouse, we are making changes every day to make our business more green.
The Bookbarn Café serves a completely vegetarian menu, with many of our treats having tasty vegan alternatives. Even those who eat meat find something to tickle their fancy, including the delicious sandwiches and homemade cakes. Our café also uses locally sourced produce wherever possible to support local businesses and cut down on carbon emissions. All of our coffee served is fair trade and organic.
For the majority of our online orders, we are now using packaging made from recycled plastic. We are hoping that one day soon; all of our packaging will be made from recycled materials.
Our warehouse team is here to sort through every book that comes through our doors. We have strict criteria to make sure that everything that can be used is, whether it is sold online, in our shop or in our Books By The Yard department, which is the perfect home for even the most distressed leather bound books.
And even when a book isn’t suitable for sale, we find as many ways as we can to make sure it is used. You can see this all over the building in many of our decorations (and you may even spot our unique tree at Christmas!)
We also supply materials to local businesses to recycle books into something new; including cards, bags and gifts that you can see for sale in our shop.
You may have even noticed that many of our cards from local businesses now no longer have plastic wrapping, at our request, to cut down on as much unnecessary waste as possible.
The final port of call for a book if it is completely unusable is our book recycling bins, and we ensure that no book that ends up there goes to landfill. Everything is ethically disposed of and is either pulped or recycled.
We know we aren’t perfect, but we are making changes every day to improve our business practices and make our bookshop a shining example of green working! If we can all do our small bit, we can make a difference to this beautiful Earth of ours.
